For a while, streaming live events seemed to be dead. It was either too expensive, or too difficult to get the live event from the production switcher to the encoding unit and finally to the website for the world to see. TriCaster makes streaming your program live a breeze. There is a button in the main interface that you click, then the encoding and serving of the windows media file begins. TriCaster even generates an address you can link to on your website.

But don?t think this is just a streaming box. TriCaster allows you to record your production to the internal hard drive for posting later (or distributing on a CD), and you can send the signal to a recording device or projector. I am really amazed at all of the things you can do with the TriCaster and it all comes in a box not much bigger than hungry man lunch box.
Capture
On location, especially during a major trade shows, you may not have a separate system to capture video, and then transfer it to the TriCaster. NewTek recognized the need for users to be able to connect a camera (DV, S-Video, Composite) and capture to the internal hard drive.

You are not going to be setting In and Out points in this capture system, but rather using simple start and stop buttons. Having this ability is certainly a plus when you are going to edit your footage with the TriCaster editing feature, but you really need to pay attention to hard drive space. There is enough storage in the TriCaster to support around six hours of DV footage. TriCaster is not an ?open and install? system, but comes as is. This means you are limited to the internal hard drive, or a FireWire addition.
Edit
I didn?t get to spend too much time working with the Edit feature of TriCaster. It is a non-linear editor that will take some getting used to if you have worked in other NLE environments, but for those who are brand new to this technology, you should be able to pick up the interface quickly.
TriCaster editing allows the user to arrange thumbnail clips in a storyboard, then add them to the Timeline on multiple tracks. You can add transitions, text, credit rolls, animation and more with a few clicks of the mouse.

Like I said, I didn?t explore this feature very much, because the real power is in the live switching and broadcasting. Since you have the ability to access media from a separate computer, there is a good chance that other system has a better more powerful NLE system installed.
