Now in the third installment, "Jeepers Creepers III" shows what happened in the days between the first two movies when the Creeper was still hunting for victims. Content Insider #557 - Fresh Start By Miles Weston Sundance was "different" this year. The #MeToo ground rules took center stage this year with some good projects where females and minorities found their voice. There were some great leading edge/edgy projects to view. There was a solid set of VR (virtual reality) offerings that showed the technology is finding its way and its place in personal and group immersive entertainment. It's found its way and is moving to become commercially viable, not just another cute oddity. There was a whole lot of angst as to how aggressive the distributors were going to be with their checkbooks. Not a lot of them wrote big checks in the past and they said it was because the excitement quality wasn't there. They're hungry for the hits but they have to be the safe hits. ...Read More »

Filmmaker Cole Claassen Capture the History of Country Music Through the Songs of Singer and Songwriter Dean Dillon How does a chance encounter bring about an on-the-spot decision to make a feature-length documentary? For Cole Claassen it all started with country music. "We wanted to shoot in 4K and had heard so much about the URSA Mini 4.6K," noted Claassen. "Its size was very convenient to our run-and-gun, fast setup format that we were basically regulated to by the celebrity interviewees who were very busy and kind enough to give us the time they did. We needed to be fast when interviewing the artists, and the URSA Mini 4.6K was a great choice for the job." ...Read More »

The Rise of the Approachable Expert With the exponential growth of video, voice over and audio have become increasingly important aspects of production. Formerly limited to radio and TV spots, today voice is an integral part of productions of all kinds and formats - from a 15 second YouTube ad, to the audio instructions for e-learning platforms, to the characters behind video games and even the voices behind new AI assistants. But as voice has become more integrated into daily life, there has been a movement toward a more customized, personable tone - more closely resembling a knowledgeable friend than that of a professor. ...Read More »
Content Insider #553 - New TV By Miles Weston People are finding OTT viewing can really be liberating. Any subject, any time, anywhere, on any device is yours to consume, enjoy. Of course there may be some streaming issues but that's not your problem...until it is. 4K HDR content needs a lot of bandwidth and 5G wireless is still in the promise phase. Everyone in the M&E and communications industries can see the money-making opportunities that are out there because people just can't get enough. Of course there are still "a few" details to be worked out but it's going to be great! Honest. ...Read More »
Content Insider #552 - Breaking the Trend By Miles Weston Every year the Oscar nominated movies get the award for the most illegally downloaded, viewed movies. That is a dubious honor. And they aren't alone because every year people relish in the fact that they get to watch movies and TV shows without paying for them And it's even worse when it comes to the growing volume of indie films - documentaries, long-form, short-form, series, VR - that are regularly pirated (stolen) and shared. If enough people turn away from the screen we'll take all the fun outta stealing them. Doesn't take a lot of work to say no. And if you decide to view the content it's nice to know you're saying thanks to that person even if you don't pay him or her directly. ...Read More »
Content Insider #551 - Video Airborne By Miles Weston Unlike in The Graduate, we have two words for you: mobile, video. Forget about net neutrality we will adjust, we will survive. The device you carry constantly and stare at continuously is rapidly becoming the first viewing screen and for kids born with them in their hands it's possibly the only screen they think about. The content shooting/production industry is moving quickly to meet the new pipeline's and screens needs. But don't let the folks selling bandwidth by the ounce there will always be other screens and people who want to really enjoy the quality of the art. Even marketers are developing new ways to be enjoyably on your screen. The pipe may be king but content is the queen...she's the one we look up to, respect, enjoy being around. ...Read More »

Content Insider #550 - Content and the Pipe By Miles Weston Everyone wants video content and no one more than the people who make a living streaming the stuff to your device - TV, computer, tablet, smartphone. How big a deal is it? Disney thinks content and access to your device is worth about $52B plus outta the chute. All the service providers think it's worth more, lot more minute after minute so they're beefing up their capacity, bandwidth and toll roads. Depending on where you live it can be free, costly, restricted, censored, blocked. It has opened the door for a lot of creative filmmakers if we can only keep the pipes wide open and the video flowing. ...Read More »
Content Insider #549 - Show Me By Miles Weston We like the most recent news that folks like Google, YouTube and Facebook are adding people to help their systems choose good and bad content. Too many people are putting unwavering faith in the technology that is supposed to make their job easier and their decisions easier. Somehow that doesn't really work for the video content we develop, distribute and view. Too many variables are involved including things like "this is what I feel like right now, right here." Even a couch potato has something going on in his/her mind - even at the subconscious level - or they'd forget to breath. The new standards that are being rolled out will make content even richer, better, more intense but it will still require people who know how to produce great content and who appreciate it. Otherwise it will be a real waste. ...Read More »
