SmartDebit responds to increase in e-commerce in India

According to a study on e-commerce trends released by Google India and TNS Australia, online shopping in India has increased by 128 per cent during 2011-2012, as substantial rise compared with the 40 per cent growth reported in 2010-2011. Electronics and books were revealed as the top categories for e-commerce, followed by apparel and accessories which have also shown a sizeable increase. Growth over these segments is expected to continue throughout 2013.

The location of e-commerce activities was also analysed, with data revealing that online purchases are not just being made in big cities. On the 12 December 2012, Google India held the Great Online Shopping Festival, designed to bring the most of the countrys e-commerce players to showcase some attractive deals on a single platform. During the festival, 51 per cent of traffic came from non-metro cities.
