How successful is TEACH-NOW?
The program is designed to be selective, innovative and comprehensive, iteratively validating its effectiveness. TEACH-NOW launched an inaugural cohort of 11 candidates in March 2013 and began accepting approximately 3 cohorts of 12 candidates each month in January 2014. TEACH-NOW has enrolled higher proportions of men (40%) and minorities (35%) than conventional teacher preparation programs. TEACH-NOW requires at least a Bachelor's degree, a 3.0 GPA, an extensive interview and a commitment to teach, and matriculates approximately one- third of its applicants. All of its graduates are in the process of receiving a teaching certificate and all but 2 have already found teaching placements. Tests of the system validate its scalability and ability to accommodate continued growth. Financially, TEACH-NOW has achieved break even and is projected to be profitable for calendar year 2014.
What is the TEACH-NOW Program?
TEACH-NOW is an online alternative teacher certification program that prepares tomorrow's teachers for tomorrow's students in tomorrow's learning world. Teach-Now is designed to be the ideal program for those embarking on their first career as well as those already in the workforce who want to become innovative, effective teachers in a digital age.
TEACH-NOW offers a competitively-priced option ($6,000) for candidates who only need a teaching certificate. It also offers a Master's degree option in partnership with existing teacher preparation programs. The essential goal of the program is to build effective teaching skills in order to help candidates change the life outcomes of their students.
The TEACH-NOW program is built on these fundamental principles:
1. The effective use of technology is at the heart of the program. Candidates will learn to think critically about technology in the classroom and in a personal learning community.
2. Collaborating to learn. Research demonstrates that teachers learn best from other teachers. Therefore, the program is structured so that candidates learn as much from each other as from their instructors.
3. Learning by doing. Candidates learn through activities which are designed to be immediately useful for professional development and in the classroom. These activities are assessed using four point rubrics rather than conventional quizzes and tests.
4. Clinical Practice. No reading or activity can substitute for time spent in a classroom with real students. TEACH-NOW weaves clinical experiences throughout the program and culminates with 3 months of practice teaching in real schools with a mentor.
Why is TEACH-NOW needed?
Teachers need an approved pathway to credentials that builds the skills required by today's and tomorrow's students. Children are digital natives before they set foot in a classroom and need an environment that will motivate them to learn. Around the world, 60 million educators teach 21st-century skills with 20th-century tools in a 19th-century school system. Technology has radically changed the way people live and work, but not how traditional schools teach. The US employs nearly 3.7 million teachers and will replace more than one million in the next 5 years. Therefore, if we want to change life outcomes for students, we need to prepare teachers to think digitally. Many current teachers do not have these skills and on-the-job professional development programs have been slow to integrate technology.
Who Built TEACH-NOW?
The founder of TEACH-NOW, Dr. Emily Feistritzer, has been at the epicenter of teacher education and certification since the mid-1980s. In 2003, she received a multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create a clearinghouse for information about alternative certification programs. These efforts led her to seek a solution to the growing need for an out-of-the-box, technology-based program for training teachers. In 2011, Dr. Feistritzer partnered with Kunali Sanghvi, an instructional designer and e-learning solutions architect, to create the ideal teacher preparation program and platform that is TEACH-NOW.
