Nerd-Sourcing: Speculate This! Writing Contest Boldly Goes Where None Has Gone Before

  (February 19, 2013)

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) February 19, 2013

Nerds everywhere rejoice: a new flash fiction writing competition believes in you, wants to tap your collective genius and give you nifty prizes and cash along the way.

Speculate This! is the first ever social writing competition aimed at writers and fans of science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Crowd sourcing has been used for all kinds of things from developing smart toasters to determining who should be President, said contest founder, Luke Peterson.

We approach this believing that fans know best what makes for great science fiction and fantasy.

The short story writing contest works like this:

  • Each month, a story theme is selected and announced through the contests podcast
  • Authors submit flash fiction stories (1000 words or fewer)
  • Fan Fiction is welcome
  • There is no entrance fee, no weird caveats and authors retain nearly all publication rights even if selected as a winner
  • Fans get to play Caesar, giving thumbs up or down to each story
  • Fans who rate and review 4 or more short stories are entered to win a monthly prize
  • The short story with the most votes for each month is declared the monthly winner and gets a nifty prize
  • The $1,000 Grand Prize Winner will be selected from among the 10 monthly winners by a panel of author-experts
  • All finalists will be published in the 2013 Annal of Speculative Fiction

According to Peterson, Speculate This! represents a revolution in speculative fiction.

We want to see Trekkers and Wookie-lovers duking it out over who can produce the best story. We want to see a battle royale between science fiction and fantasy fiction purists. Most of all, we want to see unpublished authors getting their due.

Speculate This! will officially launch in March, 2013. Contestants can get a jump on the competition by tuning into the podcast on February 27th.
