Acquisitive Canadian drugmaker Valeant Pharmaceuticals International announced earlier today that it's buying skin-cream maker Obagi Medical Products for $344 million, sending both shares up in the stock market this morning.

Obagi is best known for Nu-Derm, a topical prescription treatment for wrinkles and skin blotches. The company also sells products that complement injections of dermal fillers and botulinum toxins, which Valeant recently acquired with its $2.6 billion buyout of Medicis, maker of products like Restylane and Dysport.

Gevo Inc., (NASDAQ:GEVO) trading at $2.26 rose up $0.20 or 9.76% on a volume of 3,330,480 shares.

Gevo Inc., a U.S. biofuel producer, partly prevailed in its bid for a federal court ruling that it doesn't infringe on a Butamax Advanced Biofuels LLC patent for a method to commercially produce isobutanol.

U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson in Wilmington, Delaware, today ruled that "as a matter of law," Gevo doesn't infringe Butamax's patent under the so-called doctrine of equivalents. The judge agreed with Gevo that the difference between its method and Butamax's wasn't insubstantial as Butamax argued. The judge declined to rule that there's no infringement at all, rejecting requests from both companies to resolve the dispute without a trial.

Gevo, Inc. also announced yesterday that it has expanded its executive team to include Dr. Stephen P. Toon as its Executive Vice President of Operations and Process Development. In his new role at Gevo, Dr. Toon will report to Christopher Ryan, Ph.D., President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Technology Officer, and will have overall responsibility for Gevo`s Luverne, Minn. facility from startup through to commercial operation.
