Internet Radio Listener Pays $5,500 for a Day in the Studio With Top Internet Call-in Host Tom Leykis(March 28, 2014)
Burbank, CA (PRWEB) March 28, 2014
Noah Tool of Orange County, CA saw this eBay auction, and ultimately submitted the top bid this week to spend an afternoon with internet radio's most listened-to call-in talk show host and podcaster, Tom Leykis, paying $5,500 for the privilege.
After being named the winner, Tool wrote the following to Leykis:
"I've been a listener for quite some time - since 1995. Of course, you know that you are building something special in your business with regards to freedom of speech as well as surrounding yourself with sponsors who are like-minded. I think a lot of (listeners) are as excited as I am that you chose to continue into your 3rd year, so it's time to show support and STEP IT UP!"
In April 2012, Leykis, a 21-year veteran of Southern California talk radio, turned his back on traditional brick-and-mortar radio, instead opting for his own startup business, 100%-owned The New Normal LLC, producing his own daily call-in show and distributing it as an internet stream and subsequent podcast.
In the face of declining revenues for most of America's traditional talk radio stations, The New Normal increased revenues 65% from Year One to Year Two, increased podcast revenue 50% year-to-year, and was responsible for over $850,000 in sales as an Amazon.com affiliate.
"Everything we've accomplished has been by design," says Leykis. "Radio is a bloated, over-leveraged business, with its two largest companies a combined $31 billion in debt. It spends more time firing employees, cutting other costs and changing formats than it does figuring out what its biggest fans want most."
Leykis's business spent its first couple of years in the red, however, he says that Fiscal Year 2014 will produce, not only a profit, but that The New Normal LLC will produce a profit larger than the top two radio broadcasting companies combined.
"That shouldn't be so hard to do," says Leykis, a lifelong radio veteran. "The two biggest broadcasting companies together currently produce a profit, after debt service, of exactly zero."
The New Normal's primary product is the daily Tom Leykis Show, heard daily on the TuneIn smartphone app and at blowmeuptom.com. The show is the most listened-to live call-in show produced specifically for the internet in the world, and daily when it's heard live, it's the number one trending radio show out of over 100,000 TuneIn streams in the world.
Leykis reveals that the secret to The New Normal's success is to superserve its fans, to engage old fans and new using every existing form of social media, and to use attention-getting stunts such as unusual eBay auctions to keep fans hooked.
The New Normal's eBay auctions have included the opportunity for listeners to join Leykis in the studio on special occasions, behind-the-scenes adventures with The Tom Leykis Show crew on party buses as they head for listener events and, a listener from the Detroit area last year bid $7,800 for an opportunity to be chauffeured by Leykis in his Tesla Model S Signature all-electric performance car around the LA region.
"In order to monetize our digital content, we dare to do the things that capture the imaginations of listeners," says Leykis. "Radio can't do these things anymore; many traditional radio broadcasting companies are drowning in debt and simply struggling to survive."
The New Normal LLC, based in Burbank, CA, produces The Tom Leykis Show, and The Gary & Dino Show, as well as their respective websites. New Normal Music LLC, also owned by Tom Leykis, produces music formats New Normal Rock and Pure Pop Hits, and presents oldies-formatted Great Big Radio as well.
